Importance of Staying Physically Active: How Can India Overcome the Inactivity Crisis?

In today's fast-paced world, it's easy to get caught up in our daily routines and neglect our physical health. But the importance of staying physically active goes far beyond just looking good; it's essential for maintaining a healthy body and mind.

Alarming Rise in Inactivity

A new study reveals a disturbing trend in India: nearly half (42%) of adults don't get enough exercise. This is especially true for women (57%), mirroring a regional pattern. The study, published in The Lancet Global Health, ranks South Asia second-highest for adult inactivity, following only high-income Asia Pacific.

Globally, physical inactivity is on the rise, with a third of adults (31.3%) falling short of recommended levels. This is a significant jump from 2010 (26.4%) , putting us at risk of missing global activity targets. In India, inactivity has doubled since 2000 (22%) and could reach 60% by 2030 if left unchecked.

The study, involving researchers from the World Health Organization (WHO), analysed data from 197 countries. It also found a concerning rise in inactivity among older adults (60+).

Physical Inactivity: A Threat to Health

Physical inactivity is linked to serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease. The WHO highlights a growing burden on healthcare systems due to rising inactivity and increasingly sedentary lifestyles. This concern is echoed by a 2023 Indian study which found alarming numbers of Indians with diabetes, hypertension, obesity, and high cholesterol.

Reap the Physical Rewards

Regular physical activity offers a multitude of benefits for your physical health. It strengthens your heart and lungs, lowering your risk of cardiovascular diseases – the leading cause of death globally. Exercise also helps manage weight, reducing the risk of obesity and its associated health issues like type 2 diabetes. Strong bones and muscles are another perk. Physical activity increases bone density, preventing osteoporosis, and keeps muscles toned, improving balance and coordination.

Boost Your Mental Wellbeing

The importance of staying physically active isn't just about physical benefits. It's a powerful tool for boosting your mental and emotional well-being. Exercise releases endorphins, natural mood elevators that combat stress, anxiety, and even symptoms of depression. Regular physical activity can also improve sleep quality, leaving you feeling energised and well-rested.

Fuel Your Fitness

Just like a car needs fuel to run, your body needs the right fuel to stay active. Here's what to include on your plate to power your workouts:

  • Complex Carbs: Whole grains like brown rice, quinoa, and whole-wheat bread provide sustained energy throughout your exercise session.

  • Lean Protein: Lean protein sources like chicken, fish, beans, and lentils help build and repair muscle tissue, crucial for recovery.

  • Fruits and Vegetables: Packed with vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, fruits and vegetables keep you hydrated and support overall health. Bananas are a great pre-workout snack for their potassium content, while berries are a post-workout recovery option rich in antioxidants.

  • Healthy Fats: Don't fear fats! Healthy fats from sources like nuts, seeds, and avocado provide sustained energy and keep you feeling fuller for longer.

Find Activities You Enjoy

The key to staying active is finding activities you enjoy. Don't be intimidated by the gym! Explore options like brisk walking, swimming, dancing, or team sports. Even incorporating small changes, like taking the stairs or gardening, can make a big difference.

Start Small, but Start Today

The recommended amount of physical activity for adults is at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise or 75 minutes of vigorous-intensity exercise per week. But even small amounts of activity are beneficial. Start with short bursts of movement and gradually increase the duration and intensity as you get fitter.

Remember, the importance of staying physically active cannot be overstated. It's an investment in your overall health and well-being. It's never too late to start reaping the rewards!

Let's act on changing the stats by staying fit and living a healthier life! Join the movement, inspire others, and take charge of your well-being today.
